Obviously, having a more confident and aggressive player is better. So how should you counteract the lack of aggression? Should we have them play defense and get them ready to run backward?
Let’s not go there. Let’s go the other way.
We should have them shoot!
Why? Because it takes incredible confidence for anyone to take on the risk of shooting. Whether or not it is a goal, the risk was taken. That bold step forward means something. It has real meaning in the mind of every player.
I move forward. I shoot the ball. I score goals. I take risks. These handy phrases are what you want coursing through you players’ minds.
Defensive aggression is easier to teach. Have players wrestle over the ball for a while, and they will surely start to get physical. But for the real confidence, the confidence that is positive and productive, players must work on their shooting.
I believe the key is not really in the shot itself, but the willingness to step forward. The special quality that we are looking for is located right there in that movement.
I guarantee two or three shooting sessions and your players will move faster and have that twinkle in their eye.
